Papageno is a remote upmarket resort on the garden island of Kadavu, Fiji. Physically, it is a green jewel crowned with ancient volcanoes and white sand beaches studded with swaying palms.
The island is surrounded by healthy coral reefs that are bathed in the warm, turquoise waters of the South Pacific. Culturally, the traditions are alive and the people are warm and hospitable. In Kadavu, the real Fiji lives on.
The resort itself is an elegant oasis of fine furnishings and ammenities situated on 350 pristine acres that reach back to the ridge that cradles the resort. Our tropical gardens are simply sublime. Stroll through acres of citrus orchards, pineapples, orchids, rare palms and organic vegetable gardens all planted in beauty.
We are a sanctuary for families,divers and anyone searching for a serene tropical retreat.
Location
Upon arrival in Nadi, Fiji a short flight takes you to Kadavu whereupon we whisk you on a 20 minute powerboat ride along turquoise seas to our island paradise. Once here, we’re pretty confident you won’t want to leave.
Papageno is located on the northern, leeward side of the island. Kadavu is one of the last of Fiji’s truly wild Islands - there are no cars on the bulk of the island. Indeed, Kadavu is one of the largest remaining islands in the world that has no connecting or through roads.
Accommodation
At Papageno you have a variety of bures and room types to choose from.
You could elect to stay in our elegantly furnished Oceanside Bures (pronounced ’boo-ray’ in Fijian)with views onto the gentle waters of secluded Malawai Bay. Each bure has a thatched parasol with lounge chairs and a nearby hammock waiting for you, and a good book.
You could also stay in one of our moderate Garden Rooms surrounded by the quiet natural beauty of orchards, gardens and a stream that runs in front of the building. The ocean is a mere 30 seconds away.
All rooms have ensuite washrooms, ceiling fans and are elegantly appointed with the finest of furnishings, Fijian masks and tapa cloth. Traditionally woven mats accent the varnished hardwood floors and large screened windows with wooden louvers give guests full access to expansive ocean views and floral scented breezes.

Dining & Entertainment
Food
The splendor of Papageno’s dining experience begins in our expansive organic gardens and the clean seas right off our shores. You can savor ripe passion fruit, pineapple or mango picked fresh daily. Or you might savor fresh yellow fin sashimi or one of our famous lobsters when the seas are kind to us. Organic pork from our farm, chicken, crab and muscles are just a few more samples of our enticing menu items.
Whatever we have on the menu, rest assured that our talented local chefs prepare it so that it is tasty and nutritious. To compliment our cuisine, we offer an extensive wine list with selections from around the world.
All meals are included in our room rates and are served family-style three times a day. In between meals, we serve coffee and tea with freshly baked cakes, buns and cookies. We have been told that our coffee is among the best in Fiji and we are also blessed with beautiful spring water that bubbles up right onsite
On special occasions, Papageno prepares a traditional, Fijian ’lovo’ feast using the Fijian method of earthen-oven cooking. Fish, chicken, dalo (a local root vegetable), casava (another root vegetable also known as tapioca), spinach and other vegetables from our gardens are wrapped in leaves and cooked in coconut milk on heated rocks. It is absolutely delicious.
The dedicated staff at Papageno strive for high guest satisfaction and will endeavor to accommodate special menus for specific dietary needs. We cater to vegetarian or partial vegetarians and a special vegan diet is also available.
Activities
At night, you will be entertained by traditional Fijian songs presented by our talented local band. After a delightful meal, sample a ’bilo’ (bowl) of kava and enjoy the genuine warmth of the Fijian people through native music and dance.
Papageno’s sprawling grounds are centered around the mainhouse which is a large screened structure that allows for panoramic views of our gardens and the sea. Meals and most entertaining take part here with comfortable, elegant leather couches and a bar that serves a wide variety of cocktails, spirits, beers and wines. It’s a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy some good conversation while watching the dramatic colors of a Kadavu sunset.
Activities
All sorts of Activities are offered at Papageno with our prime activities being multi-sport based.
We have multiple hikes available for the beginner or experienced as well as beautiful walks to our local waterfalls.
Overnight Kayaking trips can be arranged as well as day trips down our beautiful coastline, where you can experience amazing views of coral,enjoy snorkeling where ever you feel like it, and take as much time as you need.
The kayaking around Papageno is ideal because we have plenty of reefs, bays, and mangrove forests to explore. Kayaks are available free-of-charge for Papageno’s guests.
We also have a number of day-trips available from diving to snorkelling to sightseeing.
We also love to design tailor-made day trips for our guests,so they get the most out of their experience.
The great Atrolabe reef that encircles Kadavu is the third largest barrier reef in the world. This makes Kadavu one of the best places to seek out, Manta Rays, soft corals,moray eels, schools of Blue Tang, barracuda. We have worked to secure reef rights with most of the neghboring viliages making most of the underwater world here and soft corals, lush seafan lined caves and pinnacles make a dramatic home to some of the reef’s more lively residents. Clownfish, Angelfish, Lionfish, as well as Blue Ribbon Eels mingle with a host of other entrancing sea-life, a divers delight!.
We also offer day trips to the great astrolabe reef as well as Cape Washington and our new Manta Discovery dive sites.
Individual or group dives are conducted with PADI certified dive masters and Instructors and are available at Papageno for a reasonable fee.
All Padi dive courses are available at compeditive prices.
There is an outer coral reef that acts as a wave barrier making our offshore waters relatively calm and perfect for swimming, snorkeling and sea kayaking.

Papageno is a sanctuary for families. Together with our caring staff, we work with our guests to develop a daily itinerary that will enrich your stay here. Experiential education is the key to retention so our goal is to introduce your children to the wonders of Papageno’s natural and social environment firsthand.
Your children could explore the tidal pools, our gardens of exotic plants and fruits or they could learn a few words in the local language, weave a basket or visit our local school. And you can relax knowing that special attention is paid to ensure that all of the activities are safe and enriching.
If you are looking to spend more time alone with your children, Papageno is ideal. We have hiking trails to waterfalls, kayaks so that you can explore the coast and nearby mangroves, and we have a beautiful shallow beach with gentle waters that you can explore together.
Whether you desire more time with your children, or you prefer to have some to yourself and have our caring staff help you out, at Papageno the means are there to make your choice easy.
To make it even easier, babysitting is offered at $15 USD per child per day.

Payment Policies

Deposits
A $400.00 USD per person deposit is required to secure your booking and is payable by Visa or Mastercard.
Final Payment is due 45 days prior to arrival.
If booking within 45 days prior to arrival, final payment is due.
Cancellations and Refunds
>45 days Forfeit 50% of deposit but remainder is transferable to another date within a year of original deposit date.
